It is tempting to save a photograph of a buoy and assume its colour is enough everywhere. That loses information. When studying a reference, identify its system, region, version and subject. These fields accompany an explanation and make it possible to return to the source.
What an edition means
This library references IALA recommendation R1001, edition 2.0 of June 2023, identified in the official catalogue. A historical copy bearing the same number may have a different date. “Found online” does not identify a version; title, edition and origin are more useful information.
The international system and authorities responsible for marking have different roles. For a learner, this means an educational diagram should point to appropriate documentation instead of pretending to be current local information. Later lessons will distinguish mark recognition from navigation applications.
