A photograph of equipment can make safety look like a collection of objects. Organise your learning around three questions: what resources exist, which documents describe them and what learning is needed to understand them. These questions complement one another; one does not answer the others.
Organise the vocabulary
- Personal equipment: subjects relating to each person.
- Collective equipment: subjects relating to the boat and group.
- Communications: equipment and language for transmitting information.
- Preparation and training: documents, understanding and practical learning.
This map is insideSail’s educational organisation. It is not a legal list of required equipment or an assessment of a boat. Specific requirements and recommendations depend on the vessel, use, jurisdiction and applicable documentation.
Rescue organisations distinguish equipment, teamwork and training in their own preparation. This institutional example shows that learning has several layers; it is not presented as a course for yacht owners. Emergency procedures need specific teaching and qualified review.
