Schematic sailboat profiles with a fin keel and a long keel; different design choices.Design choices
Manual contents

A sailboat brings together design choices, space, systems and compromises. This manual starts with the use you imagine and explains what data means: what a dimension measures, what a ratio calculates and what remains unknown. Read concepts alongside real model examples while keeping specifications, editorial analysis and owner experiences separate. Start with boat types or open a metric when it appears in the Finder. The aim is to understand a choice, not to find a universal winner.

Reducing sail area is a normal part of sailing.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

    Sloop, cutter, ketch and yawl

Rig type describes the arrangement of masts and sails.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

    Getting to know the sails

The appropriate sail depends on wind angle and strength, and the crew.

  3. Lesson · 3 min

    Reefing and furlers

Reducing sail area is a normal part of sailing.

Design labels describe priorities. They are not a scale from worst to best.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

Racer, cruiser and bluewater: what changes?

Design labels describe priorities. They are not a scale from worst to best.

Four different measurements explain a sailboat’s size.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

    LOA, LWL, beam and draught

Four different measurements explain a sailboat’s size.

Ballast percentage is a starting point, not a safety conclusion.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

    Displacement and ballast

Total weight and weight intended for stability are different concepts.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

    Ballast/displacement ratio

The percentage of displacement accounted for by ballast.

  3. Lesson · 3 min

    Displacement/Length Ratio: weight for length

D/L relates displacement to waterline length.

  4. Lesson · 3 min

    Sail Area/Displacement: sail for weight

SA/D compares sail area with a displacement-related scale.

  5. Lesson · 3 min

    Comfort Ratio

Ted Brewer’s index relates displacement, length and beam.

  6. Lesson · 3 min

    Capsize Screening Formula

A formula comparing the boat’s beam with its displacement.

  7. Lesson · 3 min

    STIX, AVS and stability

What STIX and AVS indicate about stability and recovery after heeling.

Keel, ballast and lateral resistance are not the same thing.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

    Keel types: underwater trade-offs

Keel, ballast and lateral resistance are not the same thing.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

    Rudders: support, position and maintenance

Rudder support types, position and maintenance.

The floor plan is only the beginning of a comfort assessment.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

Centre cockpit and a true aft cabin

Cockpit position, aft-cabin arrangement and internal access.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

    Cabins, galleys and living space

More cabins does not necessarily mean better liveability.

  3. Lesson · 3 min

    Berths, storage and headroom

Berths, storage and headroom in life aboard.

A range estimate needs measured consumption and usable fuel.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

Diesel power and horsepower per tonne

The relationship between engine power and boat weight.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

    Shaft drive, saildrive and propellers

Drive and propeller are part of the propulsion system.

  3. Lesson · 3 min

    Cruising speed, consumption and range

A range estimate needs measured consumption and usable fuel.

Read the design category with its applicable documentation.

  1. Lesson · 3 min

Hull speed: a theoretical speed reference

The theoretical speed calculated from waterline length.

  2. Lesson · 3 min

CE design categories and older boats

Design categories and their associated wind and sea conditions.
