Reefing and furlers
Reducing sail area is a normal part of sailing.
In plain language
Reefing reduces working sail area. Slab reefing lowers and secures part of the mainsail. Furlers can stow a headsail or mainsail, inside the mast or boom depending on the system. Stowing a sail and using it partially furled are not always the same function.
How to interpret it
The choice depends on the sail, system, crew and applicable instructions. Lines led to the cockpit may have friction or their own operating requirements.
Why it matters
A well-understood operation reduces effort and helps adapt sail area to conditions.
Limitations
There is no universal sequence or wind limit for every boat. Use the manuals and practical training.
In practice
Before buying, check access, maintenance and how to remove the sail if the system jams.
