Sloop, cutter, ketch and yawl
Rig type describes the arrangement of masts and sails.
In plain language
A sloop normally has one mast with a mainsail and headsail. A cutter carries headsails on separate stays. Ketches and yawls have a mizzen mast; traditionally the yawl’s mizzen is aft of the rudder axis and the ketch’s is forward.
How to interpret it
Terminology can vary. We preserve the source description and distinguish the rig from an inner stay added to an individual boat.
Why it matters
Dividing sail area can change handling, balancing and reefing options.
Limitations
More masts and sails also mean more components, maintenance and decisions. They do not automatically mean easier handling.
In practice
Look at sail size, line routing and actual operating effort rather than only the rig name.
