Rudders: support, position and maintenance
Rudder configuration tells part of the story, not the boat’s entire robustness.
In plain language
A spade primarily relies on its stock. A skeg-hung rudder uses a supporting structure forward. A full-keel attached rudder is attached to the long keel. A transom-hung rudder sits on the transom. Twin rudders means two rudders; rudder count is independent of one or two wheels.
How to interpret it
Support structures affect loads, access and geometry. The complete design determines the result.
Why it matters
Knowing the configuration helps plan checks of the stock, bearings, connections and emergency steering.
Limitations
A skeg does not guarantee freedom from damage; a spade does not establish fragility. Structural quality requires its own assessment.
In practice
During a visit, look for system access and confirm how the individual boat’s emergency steering works.
