Conventional formula

Ballast ratio (%) = 100 × ballast / displacement

In plain language

The ratio divides ballast mass by displacement and multiplies by one hundred. Both values must use the same unit and refer to the same version and condition.

How to interpret it

It shows how much of the stated weight is ballast. It does not reveal ballast centre-of-gravity depth or the contribution of hull shape.

Why it matters

It helps you ask design questions and detect inconsistent data across keel versions.

Limitations

A higher percentage does not guarantee greater stability. It must not feed an automatic safe/unsafe classification.

In practice

Hypothetical example: 2,000 kg of ballast in a displacement of 5,000 kg gives 40%.
