Displacement and ballast
Total weight and weight intended for stability are different concepts.
In plain language
Displacement is the boat’s mass in the stated condition. Ballast is mass positioned to contribute to stability. Do not add ballast to a displacement figure that already includes it.
How to interpret it
Distinguish light, design and loaded displacement. Water, fuel, equipment, luggage and crew can significantly change the operational figure.
Why it matters
Loading condition helps interpret ratios and plan capacity without mistaking a catalogue number for a weighing.
Limitations
Ballast height, hull shape and weight in the mast also matter. Mass alone does not establish stability.
In practice
An owner adding equipment should record the change on the individual boat rather than automatically changing the model’s data.
