Bows, beams, quarters and relative sectors

“On the starboard side” identifies a side; “off the starboard bow” adds a forward area. This chapter uses one plan view to distinguish bows, beams and quarters, then rotates the boat relative to fictional objects. Their relative positions change: an object need not move on the page to appear in a different sector.

These words describe regions and approximate relationships. They are not automatically regulatory sectors, light angles or decisions for an encounter between vessels. A worked example compares a relative description with a direction measured from north. The azimuth-and-bearing lesson develops angular conventions in their proper home without creating another definition. You also see why Portuguese amura and English beam need context in translation.
