A sailboat photograph presents many details at once. This chapter organises them into spaces, parts and systems: a map to explore rather than a list to memorise. Start by asking where a part sits, what it does and what information is still missing. A monohull with a simple rig is our starting example, not the only possible sailing craft.

Next, read documents without mixing different levels. A commercial name identifies a model; a brochure may describe options; an owner may have changed the engine or access arrangements. A historical document and a current inventory do not replace one another. By the end you can distinguish a general description from a documented configuration and a declaration about one individual boat. Boat-type lessons complement this map with different uses and design approaches.
