From above, deck, side decks, cockpit and coachroof can look like one drawing. Separating them by function makes a photograph easier to read. A section adds what a layout hides: height differences and relationships between outside and inside.

This chapter distinguishes hatch, portlight and companionway, explaining why Portuguese gaiuta should not automatically be translated as hatch. An opening can provide access, light or ventilation, but its name does not prove watertightness or indicate when it can be used. The centre-cockpit lesson complements this route: cockpit position, presence of an aft cabin and internal access are features checked separately. The examples make the relationship between inside and outside visible and help you prepare specific questions about openings, dimensions and the actual boat’s configuration.
