Seamanship and Manoeuvres
Understand the language of lines, sails and manoeuvres before practical learning.
Start learningSeamanship combines understanding, observation and practical learning. We begin with words: line names, the distinction between function and construction and the boat’s relationship with the wind. Later, knots, mooring, berthing and manoeuvring chapters can provide their own demonstrations after technical review. A clear drawing helps form a mental picture, but a manoeuvre sequence needs context and supervision. Use the first lessons to follow an explanation, identify what remains unfamiliar and prepare questions for practical tuition.
Recognise line vocabulary before memorising knots.
