Chapter
Sail trim and reefing
Orientation, shape and sail area are different dimensions.
Start this chapter ↗Trimming can change sail orientation and shape; reducing sail changes the area in use. The new lesson organises these dimensions and identifies controls by function without prescribing settings. The reefing and furling lesson develops the difference between reducing area and stowing a sail.
A worked comparison separates observation, physical change and intended result. A sheet relates to the sail or boom; a halyard relates to hoisting; other controls affect specific relationships within the assembly. No control provides a universal speed scale. This foundation makes trim explanations easier to read. Settings, reefing sequences and decisions in different conditions still require validated practical content.
